The Other Side of Hope (Finnish title:Toivon tuolla puolen) is a Finnish comedy-drama film written, produced and directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The film was produced by Kaurismäki’s Finnish company Sputnik. In December 2016, it was selected to play in competition at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.
A traveling salesman of shirts in Helsinki quarrels with his wife and leaves her. He decides to leave the sales-business and goes for a long poker tour. With the won money he buys a restaurant. His three employees are first skeptical. But the restaurant doesn’t go well. A Syrian refugee, whom the authorities have given the negative answer has to be sent back to Aleppo, when the Restaurant-owner finds him and hires him in his restaurant. The Syrian guy is looking for his sister, that he lost in the balkan route. They try all together to help.
